Ring Earth, Bonding, Conductors and Faraday Cage

The aim of bonding is to bring all the bonded parts to the same electrical potential.

  • Hot and Cold Water Systems
    Hot and cold water systems shall be bonded together and also be bonded to the earth continuity conductor system.
  • Antennas & Satellite Dish
    An antenna and satellite dish shall be bonded to the installation earthing system by means of a copper conductor of cross-sectional area at least 2,5 mm2.
  • Pumps
    All accessible extraneous conductive parts shall be bonded to the earth continuity conductor. These parts include the suction  pipe, delivery pipe and pump casing

Earthing is the most important factor to lightning and surge protection, without a proper earth the current will take the path of least resistance and can create havoc in building and structures. The better the earthing the least problems you will have with your lightning and surge protection installations.

Earthing plays the most fundamental role in the operation of the lightning protection system.

  • In order to disperse the lightning current into the earth without causing dangerous over-voltages.
  • Due to the intensity of the volts, it is very important to use the right material and earthing arrangement. The materials used for an LPS should withstand the electric and the electromagnetic effects of the lightning current and predictable tensions without being damaged. From earthing rods to earthing boxes and a variety of other earthing material for example: earthing mats, earthing cement, copper rods, earthing wire etc. are implemented.
  • Horizontal ring earth electrode should be buried at a depth of at least 0,5m but not within 1m of the walls of the structure.
  • With the resistivity that differs from sites there are several earthing arrangements to be done.

Exothermic Welding For Permanent Electrical Connections.

Exothermic welding is a safe and efficient way of making an electrical connection between conductors without using an external energy or heat process. The reliability of connections between conductors often reduces over a period of time and in many cases becomes the weak point in the electrical ircuit. Such a problem does not exist with exothermic welded connections as they provided a permanent connection between copper/copper/aluminium/steel.

  • Current carrying capacity equal to conductor.
  • No water ingress like bolt-tipe, crimping and compression connections.
  • Lightweight and portable equipment.

The basics for the height of a conductor are that the conductor must cover the protected area “thatch roof” with a 45 degree protection angel. If not you need to erect another mast until the area in question are covered fully.
